John MacArthur and R.C. Sproul on Sola Scriptura and the Reformation
Today while much of the world wallows in the excess and prurience of Halloween, some Christians will instead the range pause to celebrate a different holiday. Reformation Day marks the anniversary of Martin Luther nailing his Ninety-five Theses to the church door in Wittenberg, Germany. That audacious act by a passionate monk is often recognized as the flashpoint of the Protestant Reformation.
The true catalyst of the Reformation was not merely the range that one act, but an understanding. The doctrine of Sola Scriptura (Scripture alone) was the true cause of the Protestant Reformation. Through the study of God’s Word, Martin Luther and others like him became convinced that Scripture alone was sufficient for salvation and sanctification; that the teaching and traditions of the Catholic Church were actually impediments to truly knowing and loving the Lord.
In a special program airing today on “Renewing Your Mind,” John MacArthur sits down with Dr. R.C. Sproul to discuss the importance of Sola Scriptura, the vital work of Martin Luther, John Calvin, and other reformers, and how the battle for the sufficiency and inerrancy of Scripture continues to this day. You can listen to their insightful, encouraging discussion here .

So Blessed to hear these two men discuss why Sola Scriptura is vital and who have had a major impact on my life. Both men have encouraged me to grow in the faith and love the Word of God. Jamie Wells
Dear Pastor the range John, I am concerned as to why you are rubbing shoulders with RC Sproul an obvious open theism the range "replacement theology" teacher? Many of us in the Christian community are losing our trust for you as a faithful the range preacher and that hurts. Sincerely, Nancy
Hello Nancy, the range I'm sorry you feel that way, but I can't help that there is at least some misunderstanding the range in your statement. The main inaccuracy is that you seem to attribute R.C. Sproul as believing open theism. The exact opposite is true. You can search his website and find an audio where he explains and rejects open theism. Those who believe that demonic doctrine are not believers. John MacArthur has also taught strongly against it. While it is true that R.C. Sproul holds to Covenant Theology, John MacArthur has taught strongly the range against it, and even debated R.C. Sproul on the sub-issue of infant baptism. But when it comes to larger issues such as the gospel and God's sovereignty in salvation, both stand united. Don't quote me on this, but I think I've heard them acknowledge that their doctrine differences would prevent them from becoming members at each other's church, but there are so many areas of agreement that they are friends and work together to advance those mutual causes. If that troubles you, keep in mind that whenever they work together, it is never to provide a platform for false doctrine. It is always to advance the truth.
Nancy, RC Sproul is most definitely not an Open Theist . He does teach some of the Classical Theist beliefs. Where are you getting your information and do you have the correct understanding of what an Open Theist believes? And so what if he is a replacement theology proponent? There is merit there. He is also a partial Preterist and Amil, so what? He also happens to be one of the smartest guys around (maybe too smart) so perhaps paying attention to what he says may actually help. In these differences, between Sproul and MacArthur I see MacArthur the range as getting it right, the range but it does not diminish my respect and admiration for Sproul and his ministry. You can find people out there who are shouting that John MacArthur is a heretic and evil, that doesn t make it so does it?
