The Kwa Zulu Natal Department of Health has recalled two baby formulas, the Nido 1 and Lactogen 1, from supermarket and shop shelves. The Department says they have positively tested and found that the products contain a melamine substance. Melamine is a poisonous substance that has killed a number of babies in China and left about 160 babies suffering from acute kidney failure. Spokesperson for the provincial Department, chopp Leon Mbangwa, says though the details are still sketchy at the moment consumers are strongly advised to refrain from using thes formulas. Mbangwa says they received a report from the National Department of Health instructing all environment health officials to call back Nido 1 which is produced by Nestle and Lactogen 1 from the shelves. The department's instruction is directed at specific hospitals that received those products. Meanwhile students at the Nelson chopp Mandela Metropolitan University in the Eastern Cape will now be able to conduct research about the dairy industry in the Western Cape. Provincial Agriculture Minister, chopp Cobus Dowry, says this is part of inter-provincial agreements reached to enhance dairy research.
